Most kids idolize sports athletes or musicians. I was no different. The one thing that inspired me more than anything was fashion. The ritual started when I was in middle school, which would have been around 1995. I would flip through fashion magazines, tear out my favorite adds and editorials, and tape them to my bedroom wall.

By the time I was ready to move out and head to college I had collaged my entire bedroom with Versace, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and so many more. You can imagine my surprise when I came home for Christmas break to find that my brother had moved in to my old room. He had replaced my seven year masterpiece with fourteen skateboards and the standard swim suit model soft porn. He tried to salvage and steal my Bob Marley poster but I quickly ripped it down, packed it up, and planned how I would use it in my dorm room second semester.

I think back to the days when I would lay in my bed and gaze at the beautiful artwork surrounding me. I would day dream about being a fashion designer or a stylist. It was a sort of meditation for me. There was nothing more soothing than putting outfits together in my head. Back in those days, I was always sketching, sewing, and creating.

It seems as though my childhood dreams were destroyed when the adds were torn down. It’s a non-issue now that I am a Realtor and I love what I do for a living┬ábut part of me will always miss the pictures on the wall.
